Uh some GSDs do still herd sheep!! Also the Schutzhund testing was NOT a sport!! It was a test of the temperament of the GSD to make sure that it has a sound mind and body. GSDs were bred to be a “working” dog and the good ones still are. If you have one that is hard to train and out of control it is just a poorly bred GSD in the first place.There are still GSDs that can and are used for herding and do schH.

The german shepherd was a bred as a hearding dog not a sport schutzhund dog. The temepremnt needed to be a good hearding dog is very different then one needed for a good Schuthund dog. they are not used for hearding any more in Germany BECAUSE they are considered to HARD on the livestock because of SCH breeding. 50 years ago the shepherd was not an intensly hyper difficult to control dog and was able top heard sheep without killing them.
Nice vid. While I do agree that there has been an explosion of over-breeding because its easier to gain entry. But there are still some very dedicated breeders out there who still produce very nice bloodlines. Check my vid and I think ull agree
The decline started when the fanciers went with form over function. If the representatives of the breed are not working, how are they evaluated for breeding? I mean, the GSD is a working dog, right? Confirmation should only serve function. What has made the GSD the breed that it is comes from the ability it has to work. Throughout the stress of work the soundness of mind and body of each dog can be seen.
The insight gained from work is invaluable when evaluating them. If breeding criteria is left to confirmation alone, the spectrum in the breed will only widen. Why continue down this path? Von Stephanitz was an aristocrat. Thats why those that write history portray him as the creator. But the reality, the breed is a blue collar breed. Molded to work by men that worked. So, pull up the pillows, put the dog outside so his pads and coat can thicken up, and the two of you go to work.
The dog is a working tool. We design tools with ergonomics in mind to enhance their performance. Why would we not breed dogs in a fashion that enhances their performance?

german line is better.. american showline GSD’s are not workable anymore compare to the german showlines.. its much easier to find a workable showline in germany that in america.. american showline GSD’s are just good for pets…
I wish all german shepherds were still bred for working and military use….then we’d still have that family companion that was more akin to RIn tin tin than a 70lb purse dog…I am happy with my unregistered, non-AKC shepherd. She is huge, she has a straight back, and she stilll looks like a working class champ…makes the AKC gsd up the road look like a wimp. People think she’s mixed because she is larger, and doesn’t have the cutesy blonde on black show dog, but a rougher wolf-like look…
We are not into show dogs, we bought him because he had size and presence, What we do not want however is another dog of his kind as he seems nothing like the GSDs I remember.
Thanks for the job you are doing in trying to preserve our old style Shepherds.
Before I go any further I should tell you we have a Schutzhund type male now out of****Kennels. His sire is*****Sch III. He is an incredibly beautiful (to look at) GSD but neurotic and nervous, hyper at our slightest move. A little too much energy. He has incredible show ring potential and was actually doing some Schutzhund III work before we bought him. Since we have no desire to show the dog or have him shown that has since ceased.
I recieved this letter it helps explain what the average person wants. they also say a friend with a brother has the smae issues very difficult dogs to deal with for the average family
Hi Robin: Your dogs remind me of the German Shepherds I grew up with all those years ago but were pretty much wiped out by modern day breeding practices. As a kid my family raised GSDs, some imported stock. I basically walked away from the breed due to modern breeding practices.
The real thing that the american lines stay in the time and the german lines advance all my regards
There is no difference both American and German bloodlines still look like half dog half frog and still produce dogs that have HD and run like dogs that have no strength in the back ends their gate rolls give me the original lines everytime the straight back ask yourselves if the lines have improved why do the poilce force not use them but breed their own from the original shape
My GSD is big with a straight back, he is wonderful. I wish they had stayed like that. He makes the AKC standards stupid, We meet other GSDs that are of standard and his temperament is way better and his health is too. He is way off @ 120 and 30 inches high wouldn’t mind seeing him in a smaller form.

Now compare Elizabeth Taylor with Megan Fox, or you can compare Grace Kelly with Angelina Jolie, OK I go forMegan Fox and Grace Kelly , angulate is good but not to much, It is simple these modern dogs compete for beutinesss , What happens in the supermodel world thins is good but not exagerate ,Ok Angle is good but I dont Want backlegs solittle, My German is 5 months , IT comes from CH lines his great grandpa is Hickoryhills Bull Durham
i feel so sorry for GSD’s theyre wodnerful dogs and yet look at what human selfishness has done to them, by inbreeding and what not

I show dogs. It is sad because it is usually not the dog that is being judged but the person handling the dog. Champions are made by who is handling them, not because the dog is deserving of the title. Then those dogs go on to breed more inferior dogs. Such a shame for the breed. Your dogs are gorgeous and follow the, form equals function rule. You have not allowed fashion trends to influence your breeding program. Congratulations on your beautiful dogs.
