Why do some expect the puppy to be smarter, better mannered, more obedient than they were as a toddler?

By

Question by Chetco: Why do some expect the German Shepherd Puppy to be smarter, better mannered, more obedient than they were as a toddler?
Don’t they realize that this is a baby animal, with less intelligence than most people?
The dog’s first language is ‘whine-whine, growl, woof-woof’ they have a whole new language to learn, and a whole new set of rules.

Even more puzzling is the people who think they will learn everything without any training.
When I advise askers to ask their mom how long it took to train them…or to put themselves in the dog’s place, and try to think as the dog would..they send me nasty emails, claiming that I am stupid, and much worse.
I feel like I should stop answering questions, because I can’t lie.
Maybe I’ll find another topic to answer….sigh

Because some people are barely smarter than the puppy they are trying to train.

i don’t know i bought a 6 week old cocker spaniel about 3 months ago and i sure wish it was that easy i have to stay on him non stop about toilet training and trying to keep him from biting my 5 year old daughter…i cant wait for him to be trained but i do under stand that it takes time..just like you said they r very comparable to children!!

I’m not sure why people do this. I have always had the feeling that my puppy/ dog is as well behaved as I let them be. They are animals and untrained they do what they would in nature. I alway start training my puppies right away. Not with stuff that is hard for them, but just things that help them get accustomed to their life in the human world. I just wish people weren’t so naive to believe their puppies will just be trained without actually doing any training!

  4. m j says:

Ha! You got me! People will take home a puppy, leave it loose in the house and just expect it to not get into trouble. I usually ask them if they would leave a toddler alone and expect it to be good. Sometimes it is like a little lightbulb going off, but other times they can’t seem to make the connection that
    puppy = toddler

I guess they think because its a dog, it should just automatically know the rules…

Sad how out of touch your average pet owner has gotten to be about handling animals. And then so many say they don’t want to take a class or read a book, they just want that magic wand to solve all their problems so they don’t have to work to hard or spend any money.

No, don’t stop answering questions! There are so few around who aren’t clueless! People need to hear, even if they don’t like the answer.

I got my first puppy (hoad always adopted dogs before) last year, and within a week I realized it is like having a baby. They don’t sleep throught the night, need constant attention, and potty trainning. The have to be taught how to behave just like you would teach a child, I completely agree.

    Because the VAST MAJORITY are
    #1=TOTALLY IGNORANT
    #2=STUPID
    # 3=living inna FANTASY WORLD(Disney has a LOT to answer for)
    # 4=LAZY

    Thank goodness,ignorance is CURABLE!!

Now,if we can only find a cure for the rest.

Some people are just too ignorant or can’t get stuff through their heads.

  8. maria g says:

the language verbal is not important .

  9. meimei says:

I think that the people who think such things need to see 100 puppies and 100 toddler dogs. They need to see how they act and then they will know puppies don’t act better as puppies then as toddlers.

  18. Hoopermazing says:

@FAKEIO “Good Nite Sweetheart, Good Nite,” by (ironically enough) The Spaniels… and many years later used as the closing song for the über-corny Sha Na Na television show.

  19. Hoopermazing says:

@sprtkes Well, that was one of the stupider comments I’ve read in a while. They are puppies. They sleep a good deal of the time away, and there is nothing wrong with having a specific bedtime for dogs or humans. To have said something so absurd, I have to assume that you couldn’t possibly have a kid. Otherwise, you’d know better.

  26. NeoPelon21 says:

don’t parents typically give their children a bedtime? That would be telling a human when to sleep, wouldn’t it?

  27. bltmic says:

Ididnt try to train my boxers to sleep. Whoever posted my video doesn’t know why I made this video. I was working in my garage and when I started to sing they went to sleep.

  28. mrAndy45656 says:

    omg sooo cute

  29. jadekathleen says:

You train a dog to sit, lay down, fetch and roll over. You walk them on leashes and crate train them. I hardly think singing lullabies to help them relax and sleep is “dumb” or unjust. Although some people treat their dogs as such, dogs are in fact, not human.

  30. jadekathleen says:

This is the most adorable thing I have seen in a long time!

  31. FAKEIO says:

Whats that song, I cant understand.
I have a beagle and he hates to be alone so if i learn that song it would be awsome.
PLZ PLZ PLZ say me the song.

  32. TheTruthGypsy says:
