Training new puppy when other dogs are less than obedient?
ByQuestion by C: Training new German Shepherd Puppy when other German Shepherds are less than obedient?
I want to get a Black Lab German Shepherd Puppy soon, but we already have German Shepherds who have not been optimally trained. (Their training was before me/beyond my control) How can we properly train the German Shepherd Puppy NOT to have all the bad habits of the improperly trained German Shepherds?

train the German Shepherd Puppy where there are no distractions from your other ones. That way your new German Shepherd Puppy won’t think its ok to act like your other German Shepherds. then maybe later you can do the same for your other German Shepherds.
Or you can call bark Busters for your other German Shepherds and I promise it helps. I used them for my 2 German Shepherds and by the end of the session my German Shepherds were changed German Shepherds.

Training a German Shepherd Dog
Seven week old German showline German Shepherd Puppy from Ronaldo Zellergrund and Quendi vom Olympus learning to stand. Notice she already knows how to sit and lay down on command. Pup learns the stand in this short video.

You can still do it, but be prepared since it’s going to be difficult. Dogs pick up other dogs behaviour really fast and your puppy may easily get in the same pat as your older dogs. (I’d had this problem before). Try to do something for your other dogs too, old dogs can learn new tricks.
All I know is that we had to get tough with our little puppy. I was told by a few people not to rub the puppy’s nose in her accidents inside but she never understood until we did. Also, we had to be tough with her as far as minding. We had to show her that we were the bosses. She mids us well, but does not care too much what other people tell her to do. She is a good girl now, for the most part. She still tests us once in a while. She is almost two now and we still can not leave her out of her kennel for the night because she will go potty inside. I know a lot of people don’t like Ceasar Milan but I tend to agree with his techniques. Dogs need to know who their boss is and need to learn to be submissive. Good luck with the new puppy. I would bet that you can still use some tough love on the other dogs while training the new pup. My first dog was four when I got him and he did learn to mind, sit, stay.
How many other dogs do you have? Just because a dog was or wasn’t trained before it doesn’t mean that training should stop, or should never begin. If you want a puppy your just going to have a harder time with your older dogs adding a new pup, never mind how the puppy behaves, think of how dangerous it could be for a pup with other dogs that you have no control over. Sounds dangerous to me.
Bad habits can be changed, I think that your best bet would be to train the dogs that you already have, and once they are properly trained, add the new pup, but if you just leave your other dogs the way that they are, the new puppy is likely to fall into the same routines.
Training isn’t so much for the dog as it is for the owner. If you find a good trainer who truly understands dogs and their behaviour, training can be easy. Then you and everyone in your home needs to reinforce the training. Simple as that. Training doesn’t end when you leave the training facility, that’s just the begining, the real training is done at home, with you, and if you continue the training every single day, your dogs will be happy and easily controlled, and they will have an easier time adjusting to your new pup.
Good luck!

Schutzhund champion in the making!!
Impressive
What you and that pup are doing is marvelous, keep up the good work!
@jmdnarri me personally havent dont schutzhund training. but my parents have been doing it since the 70′s. and they said when the dog is old enough (6 months old) then they will start with helping me train my dog for that. as for obedience, i know how to do that.
@europe0wnz so you have a well mannered obedient dog, thats all very well. I do too. But are you, or have you ever, trained a dog for any kind of detailed and specific competition, such as Agility, Obedience or Schutzhund. In these sports, having your dog just mind its manners is not enough, these dogs are asked for the highest level of precision dogs are capeable of. Treats and toys are essential to bring out the dogs drive to play the game even when your demands are high.
@jmdnarri our dogs do what we want. our male German shepherd whose 4 years old puts dogs to shame like its nothing. when you put the lease on him he sticks to your left side and stays there. when my dad walks over the flea market with him he doesnt even have to give him demands. my dad stops he stops, and sits. he ignores other dogs and only keep his attention on my dad. and he did that not by giving him a treat every time he does it well, but just a good pat on the head and telling him he’sgood
@europe0wnz have you had that problem in many of your dogs? My club has been working pups this way for 15 years and never had a problem weaning off the treats as they mature. Maybe you are missing somthing if your pups won’t work for you as they grow up.
What a beutiful dog. And so clever!!!!
@thejgreeny they’re 1 of the smartest dogs ever, but the way she trains it isnt right. you dont use treats to much, or else they expect it when they do it everytime.
I like your sprinters

German is “standard language” in shutzhund.
when i try to train my pup he bites me , like really hard. he is 7 weeks and i dont know what to do any more. somebody please help
@mourningdove169
Good point. I think different though. I’m planning to teach my pup basic words in english , like the cue words , so in time he would understand a complete sentence as “go lay down” which the cue would be down. But you are right it would be dangerous to use english for commands as bite, I think I would use german for those commands . thanks , beautiful pup by the way.

My boyfriend has GSDs and he trains them in German so there’s less confusion and less distraction if other people are trying to command the dog. Aka, someone who doesn’t know how he is trained shouldn’t be trying to control the dog and they won’t be able to.
I have a question, Why is she teaching her the commands in german. I currently have a GSD he’s 8.5 weeks old , and I’m planning to enter him in sieger shows in the future if he shows potential, and good structure. I’m wondering if they need to learn the commands in german in order to enter the shows or doesn’t matter.
very very nice dog.
She is so smart and cute.
