How to train puppy to be like one in the army k9 units?
ByQuestion by Duct tape Guy: How to train German Shepherd Puppy to be like one in the army k9 units?
My family and I went to an airshow today, and one of the perks was a presentation of an explosives German Shepherd and one of the more cliched military German Shepherds that runs after bad people running away.We just got a German Shepherd Puppy,6 mnths old a few days ago, and I thought it would be cool to teach him some of these tricks. I’m too young to go into the army or marines, so how can I train him?

The German Shepherds in the K9 unit are VERY cool. They have training that generally costs ,000-,000 or more. Unless you have that kind of money to dish out…they wont be quite like that. BUT you can still teach your German Shepherd some very col tricks at home on your own.
You can take him to basic obedience classes to start and move on from there.

If you don’t train the dog the right way, you’ll just make it people agressive. It’ll end up biting someone and then you lose the dog and your house. Just teach the dog basic commands. After that you can teach it to do other cool stuff that won’t make people sue you.
You can’t.
The mindset alone tells me plenty – this kind of thing is NOT “cool”. It is NOT fun and games. It’s IMPRESSIVE, yes, very much so. But not “cool.” The end result of this kind of training is a dog capable of seriously injuring – maybe even KILLING – a human being. Improper training leans more towards the latter.
The dogs you saw where specifically bred, selected, and trained by PROFESSIONALS – people who know dogs and dog behavior/training. They weren’t pets someone brought into the corp, they weren’t rescue dogs. The dogs cost thousands upon thousands of dollars just to buy (from breeders who are involved in the whole shebang and have been working in the field for decades), and took years to train and perfect to the point where they can be trusted.
You could potentially do schutzhund work (which is very similar) but your dog MUST have the proper temperament – most dogs do not have what it takes, FYI. YOU must also have what it takes to be a handler – again most people do not. Not to mention this kind of training costs thousands of dollars IF you and your dog make the cut.
These kind of dogs are NOT pets. If the dog is not properly trained (and no, you cannot “home train” a dog like this OR do any kind of bite work at home) then it can be DANGEROUS. A liability. It would be highly unlikely you or your dog would be suitable – there are plenty of things you CAN do with your pet quality animal though, including agility (which these dogs do as well), flyball, water sports, and sniff training (IE the sniffing part minus the chase/bite work – at the advice of a pro, of course.)
Get your dog involved in basic obedience classes – use an accredited trainer (IE not Petsmart or Petco.) Title your dog in obedience, do some sport work (agilty.) Form a BOND with your dog. Then if you think you have the dough to spend on the higher level training, find someone to evaluate your dog to see if it’s even possible – don’t get your hopes up.
