How can I make my puppy more obedient?

Question by Stasia: How can I make my German Shepherd Puppy more obedient?
He understand commands, but he’s trying to be dominant by only listening when he wants to. most of the time he’s good, but when he’s mo9re interested in something else, he’ll completely ignore me. Also, when giving him commands, I have to repeat it for him when a more well-behaved German Shepherd Puppy listens the first time. How can I make him listen?

Your German Shepherd Puppy isn’t trying to be dominant! You’ ve taught him to ignore you by repeating your commands. All German Shepherd puppies, including more well-behaved German Shepherd puppies, have to be taught correctly. Once you’re 100% sure that your German Shepherd Puppy understands the command, you NEVER repeat it, you give a correction (and keep it very mild, you’re dealing with a German Shepherd Puppy).

You sound like you really would benefit from classes and your German Shepherd Puppy most definitely would. He’ll get socializing he needs and you’ll have a qualified instructor to teach you how train.

Hey, it depend on how consistent you are on your training and if your family is on the same track. If your family isn’t the puppy could have mixed signals. Also, if he’s between 7 and 10 months he can be going through what is called terrible twos. They tend to be defiant, and stubborn. All i can say is be really consistent and don’t cater to him. if he doesn’t come when you call him once. try clapping your hands. if he still doesn’t go get him, make him surrender to you and try it again. Keep the distance little at first a progress :)
    I hope ive helped :)

Try teaching him the “watch me” command; if he’s not looking at you or giving you his undivided attention and you repeat a command over and over then eventually it will just become meaningless to him (just another word, no longer a command). “Watch Me” makes him look at you and once you’ve got that his attention then you can give him another command.

For the “watch me” command, take a treat and put it by your puppy’s nose ( but hold it in a way that he can sniff but not eat) then move the treat up to your forehead area and say “*insert puppy’s name*, watch me.” Practice that a few times every day until your puppy gets it (also, always signal with the same hand, but don’t always make the treat visible or give it from the same hand every time and don’t give a treat every time. That way he will do it every time because he might get a treat, not just when he sees one.)

The “watch me” command usually gets my puppy to pay attention, though there are still times where he’s more interested with something else, but as a whole I’ve found this to be a very good technique get to my puppy to pay attention to me.
