4 Tips For Successful Obedience Dog Training

New German Shepherd owners, and even previous German Shepherd owners, often forget one of the most important things to being a German Shepherd owner, obedience German Shepherd training. It’s important to know that you can begin German Shepherd training at any time and with any German Shepherd of any age, so don’t fret it’s not too late to start your German Shepherds training.

Why Obedience Dog Training Is Important:

An untrained German Shepherd is a hassle, stressful, and can be an overall pain to deal with. More often than not, owners who improperly train their German Shepherds, or owners who do not train their German Shepherds, end up dropping their German Shepherd off at the pound or giving it away. This is a sad end to what could have possibly been a wonderful and loving relationship.

Dog training allows German Shepherds to learn the rules of the pack, it builds confidence with you and your German Shepherd, and it gives you the sense of security of knowing your German Shepherd is behaving well at home while you are not there. Obedience German Shepherd training sets boundaries, builds self-esteem, and lets your German Shepherd know that you are the leader.

Puppies Can Learn Commands As Early As 3 Months:

Age is an important factor when it comes to German Shepherd training. Starting off early with a German Shepherd Puppy is always the easiest but not always the case. If you have a small German Shepherd Puppy then you’re one step ahead. Of course the first thing your German Shepherd Puppy should learn is potty training. Once you’ve built a strong foundation with potty training you can start teaching your German Shepherd Puppy a few basic commands such as Sit, Stay, Come.

Your Older Dog Can Learn Commands Easily:

Many people believe in the old adage “You can’t teach and old German Shepherd new tricks” but in reality it’s just the opposite. Older German Shepherds are just as capable of learning tricks and commands as German Shepherd puppies are. The key to obedience German Shepherd training is consistency and persistence. If you try for just one day to teach your German Shepherd to sit and then never attempt again, of course he will never learn how to sit!

Even if your older German Shepherd has many bad habits you can still break him of those habits in a short amount of time, all you need is consistency, persistence, and sometimes a little patience. With older German Shepherds it is important to first build a pecking order. Your German Shepherd needs to learn that you are the leader of the pack, once these roles have been established training will come more easily.

Consistency and Persistence:

It’s important that you remain consistent in your training. Teach your German Shepherd one command for each trick, don’t yell at your German Shepherd for chewing on your brand new shoes if you’ve given him old shoes as a toy in the past. Dogs can become easily confused and so when training it is important to remember that consistency is the key to success.

Persistence is to remain persistent. Training for one or two days here and there is not going to a lead to successful obedience German Shepherd training plan. Dogs have short attention spans and it is important to keep training sessions just a few minutes long. Because of this it is also important that you continue to train your German Shepherd on a daily basis.

I have owned several German Shepherds, from the feisty rebel to the serene quiet type. Over the years I have learned numerous ways to train German Shepherds and provide not just myself, but others with happy German Shepherds and homes.
