Question: Puppy training/care tips?
ByQuestion by Veronica: Puppy training/care tips?
I’m soon to be a new puppy owner, and this would be the first time owning a German Shepherd for me. I’ve researched on the subject every spare moment, but there might be stuff I’ve passed over that could be critical to my puppy’s well being and development, So if anyone has any tips on puppy care, puppy training, or what products are good and what products are dangerous for them, such as food brands and such, sharing them with me would be awesome. Thank you SO much for your time!
I believe, if everything goes according to plan, I am getting a lab. If not, I will visit a shelter to find a mutt, after all, they make great pets too.

Hi Veronica. I just got a new puppy too. What kind are you getting? That’s kind of important to know for offering tips!
At Petsmart, they have books you can buy by the kind of German Shepherd. I’ve been reading mine and it’s been really helpful. It gets into how to keep up with grooming, basic obedience training, feeding, developmental milestones, etc.

I have the wildest dog ever and there is one product that always works. It’s called kong. Its a rubber object. And then you by a stuffing and you stuff the kong with treats, peanut butter, etc. It keeps the dog busy for hours. Its kinda expensive, but it’s well worth it.
Also, for training my family and I took our dog to Pet Smart for classes. It really helped a lot.
hope i helped! Good luck with you’re new puppy!
I would recommend crate training. It is the fastest way to potty train puppies. However, you have to do it right in order for it to work. Your puppy will probably whimper the first week or so when he is in there, however, you should not give in to his cries when he is in his cage.
Only when the dog has stopped crying should you reward with letting him out, and directly going outside to the bathroom play on the floor with him for a while or nap with him for a bit, but back in his cage if you are not watching and he is unsupervised.
At night, same thing. It might be hard not to cave in to cries at night. But, the dog must know that you are the boss, and that he cannot get his way when he cries. Only when the crying stops (which could take a while) should you go to him and comfort.
In addition, meal train. I feed my dogs twice a day (3 times when they were puppies). I do not let them free feed. That is a sure fire way for your dogs to get overweight very quickly.
Good luck and make sure to take your dogs on plenty of walks!!! Love and affection, after training and exercise and you should have a very well-balanced pup:)
